Nestled in the heart of Davis, CA, Open Rice Kitchen stands out as an authentic Cantonese and Asian fast-casual gem that perfectly balances flavor, quality, and affordability. This vibrant eatery offers a deliciously diverse menu that appeals especially to college students and locals seeking hearty, flavorful meals without stretching their budget.
The moment you step inside, you sense the casual and welcoming atmosphere—a no-frills, cozy spot where the focus is purely on delivering great food. The kitchen hums with energy, and the centerpiece of it all is the wok, expertly fired up to produce that elusive "wok hei"—the smoky, seared essence that elevates classic Cantonese dishes to memorable heights. It’s this mastery that sets Open Rice Kitchen apart and keeps diners coming back for more.
The menu is a lively tour through favorite Asian comfort foods, each dish crafted with a perfect balance of seasoning and freshness. For those craving a signature dish, the Pork Belly Fried Rice is an indulgent must-try, with succulent pork belly bits mingling flawlessly with fluffy rice and vegetables, all kissed with that coveted wok hei flavour. Fans of noodle dishes will relish the Beef Chow Fun, where tender beef slices combine with silky rice noodles, broad and fragrant, creating a satisfying harmony of textures and tastes.
Vegetarian options shine as well, showcasing vibrant, sauce-coated vegetables like the garlicky Black Bean Bell Peppers and Onions and the sweetly-spiced, tender Eggplant with Garlic Sauce. Each bite captures authentic Cantonese flavors that feel comforting yet exciting.
For a lighter yet equally flavorful start, dive into the daily specials such as the crispy Potstickers or tender Pork Belly Sliders, which pair wonderfully with their refreshing drinks—giant, perfectly blended Thai Tea and Black Milk Tea with Boba that customers rave about. The drinks, generously sized and infused with rich, creamy tea flavors, provide the perfect counterpoint to the savory fare.
The soups here are soul-warming; the Wonton Noodle Soup brims with housemade wontons tucked alongside tender BBQ pork and crunchy bok choy swimming in a savory broth, while the Braised Beef Noodle Soup offers tender brisket in a richly spiced yet balanced broth that’s both satisfying and restorative.
What truly elevates Open Rice Kitchen is the unpretentious charm combined with consistent quality. Customers consistently mention the attentive service—Jorge at the front desk is noted for his warm, prompt hospitality—and the superb value that few local spots can rival. It’s clear this isn’t just about feeding your hunger but creating a flavorful, comforting escape at a price that leaves you smiling.
Whether you’re looking to grab a quick and tasty bite between classes, indulge in robust Asian flavors, or enjoy a casual meal with friends, Open Rice Kitchen is an essential stop. Its blend of traditional Cantonese cooking techniques, varied menu, and wallet-friendly pricing create a genuine neighborhood experience where each visit promises kindness, bold flavors, and plenty of reasons to return.
Good value for the price, I can see how this place is popular with college kids. The guy manning the wok knows how to get that nice seared “wok hey” that only a super hot wok can produce. The pork belly fried rice and the beef chow fun had excellent wok hey. Good first approximation of cantonese style food. Here’s a free consultation: 1)use a lower sodium content soy sauce, will help flavors pop 2)add a dash of sugar and msg to help round out the flavor profile. 3)increase the amount of white pepper in the beef chow fun and the fried rice 4) once cooking is done, toss with a few drops of sesame oil to add aromatic dimension then the food will be absolutely muy bien! Senior, you are already better than most of the asian restaurants around, this will put you into the most revered Asian Aunty level of cooking. I wish more people cooked like you. You know how to stir fry and not just add “heat” to the food. For sure we’ll be back the next time we are in Davis.
THIS IS THE BEST CHEAP FOOD IN DAVIS IF YOURE BROKE OR IN COLLEGE THIS IS WHERE YOU GO!!!!!! I love this place bro I can go here spend 15 dollars and not have to eat for the rest of the day with my big back. The teas and slushies are HUGE. Mindset is all its about, if you come in here thinking you're getting a 1 star Michelin sit down meal then you are wrong. Its cheap food, tastes great but pretty unhealthy. Even if you do dine in they still bring the food to you and some select items are actually so fire. I love the Ork Fries and the Pork Belly sliders if they have them because they're usually a special.
Unexpectedly good and varied Chinese food at inexpensive prices, generous portions. Jorge at the front was incredibly kind, prompt, and checked in on us often - would definitely come back!
The server was very friendly and let us know about the wait for food, which was fine with us. The prices are really low so I had few expectations. The broccoli and carrots with house sauce was really good, but the basil chicken didn't have much flavor. My daughter loved her boba. We'll definitely be back.
This place is a gem. It's like a hole in the wall. Cheapest place to eat in Davis. It's cheap but also excellent value for the food. The most expensive item is $9.50. the Thai tea is only $2.50 elsewhere it would have been $5.50. the Singaporean chow fun definitely has the curry and kick in it. The pork belly sliders were a good half inch thick plus you get 3 for $5. Looking forward to trying the rest of the items.
